4 Crazy Healthy (Yet Simple) Superfoods

Superfoods seem to be coming and going every week, and there are such a variety that exist, it can be hard to really understand what foods you should be purchasing and eating as regularly as possible. The worst part: some of the "best" superfoods seem to be equally super expensive foods that you can only find in specialty markets that require a secret handshake to enter (well, maybe not that last part...).

At the same, though these mighty sources of nutrition cans seriously empower and fuel a healthy life, something that directly connects to your yoga practice.

So which superfoods are the best to actually eat on a regular basis? The answer might surprise you. Here are 4 of our top favorites, that combine practicality with cost effectiveness and ease of locating.

1. Greek Yogurt

SuperfoodsGreek Yogurt starts our list off because of a few powerful traits: it's contains nearly twice the level of protein of regular yogurt and 50% less sodium. Greek yogurt is unique, tastes great, and compared to plain yogurt, just does the job better. What's more, this superfood is a perfect medium to add in other fruits and healthy foods, like apples, nuts, low fat granola, or honey. Using Greek yogurt as a centerpiece of your morning is a great way to expose yourself to healthy amounts of protein and fats without killing you on calories.

2. Blueberries

According to Linda Mitchell, RD, “Blueberries are actually one of the healthiest foods on the planet [and] you can eat them plain or add them to cereals."

And it's true: blueberries are literally bursting with antioxidants. Antioxidants help manage and effectively destroy the body's free radicals, which cause lead to disease when out of balance. For example, regular consumption of antioxidants (easy to get with blueberries) has been linked to keep diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease and other age related conditions like Alzheimer’s at bay.

3. Avocados

Avocados aren't just delicious in guacamole – they're super power superfood that are usually available in most places, due to their gaining popularity around the country. But wait, says your friend, aren't avocados super fatty? Yes, but not all fats are bad. The delicious, creamy fruits are a natural source of healthy monounsaturated fats. These fats aren't the same fats you find in processed food or your burger – these actually play a role in improving the circulation, and also have the potential to lower blood pressure.

4. Spinach

Ditch the iceberg and start snacking on some dark leafy greens like spinach. Spinach, just like other dark leafy greens (think kale, collards, Swiss chard and bok choy), are loaded with nutrients, ranging from healthy sources of calcium, folic acid and vitamin K, to iron, vitamin C,  and fiber. Spinach also has a secret weapon: lutein. Lutein is a xanthophyll (oxygenated carotenoids that are synthesized within the plastids of plants) that has been linked to everything from eye and vision benefits to helping prevent macular degeneration.
