The Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is often referred to and depicted as the 'thousand-petaled Lotus.' This chakra sit atop the chakra ladder, where the Root Chakra grounds us to earth, the Crown Chakra connects us to what is beyond earth – the heavens and ether above. This chakra is highly complex, dealing with transcendence beyond all other things and worldly attachments. Like the Third Eye Chakra, this chakra deals with divinity, enlightenment, and true and complete balance. This serves as a connection to the universe and helps breed our imagination and self-creation.

In Sanskrit, the Crown Chakra is referred to as Sahaswara. It exists on the top of the head, sometimes depicted as being just above the body. It relates to the nervous systems, pineal gland, and brain. It deals with awareness, understanding, and our highest states of potential and being. When this chakra is opened and fully functioning, you're enabled to have complete control of your thoughts and actions. This chakra directly connects us to the pure cosmic energy of the universe.

Element, Color and Sense Associated with Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is not associated with an element per se. Rather, it is developed by thought and the essence of understanding and mindfulness. It is a cosmic consciousness that exists within us. It is an element of oneness with all things founded by a pure sense of transcendence.

The color of the Crown Chakra is deep violet. It represents the connection between red (matter) and blue (spiritual energy). It is both subtle and overt, dealing with all form of our health, from our spiritual, to mental, to physical health.  Violet relates to letting go of sadness and intense and powerful change. It is cleansing and purifying, and contains mystery and mysticism. In this same trend, the sense of the Crown Chakra deals with a sense of wholeness and completion.

Tips for Balancing the Crown Chakra

  • Meditate upon the silence after the Om mantra
  • Reflect in silence
  • Think of all your worldly attachments, and let them go
  • Realize that letting go of these things doesn't mean never having them
  • Engage in spiritual practices, rhythms, and groups
  • Practice the Lotus or Tree asana

This chakra can be especially difficult to fully open, as it deals directly with understanding oneness while also letting go of earth attachments. Consider the lessons of all the chakras when reaching this point, and see the connections between them. Understand that we as people are so grounded in this world, yet also so light and tend to drift high into our heavens with our thoughts. Reflect upon the truths of these dynamics that exist within us – the chakras – and know that the path to opening and cleansing these chakras of debris is often a very long process that requires deep commitments.
