“The month of May was come, when every lusty heart beginneth to blossom, and to bring forth fruit; for like as herbs and trees bring forth fruit and flourish in May, in likewise every lusty heart that is in any manner a lover, springeth and flourisheth in lusty deeds. For it giveth unto all lovers courage, that lusty month of May.” — Sir Thomas Malory, Le Morte d’Arthur
There’s an inexplicable high that many of us experience as we witness the full awakening of all living things throughout the month of May. In many parts of the world, it seems as if almost all the divine energies of the trees, flowers, plants, and wildlife come together to simultaneously reach their peak point of growth.
We, too, are part of this natural cycle of growth. By aligning ourselves with these seasonal forces that give rise to bursts of life, color, and creativity in May, we put ourselves in the best position to grow to our fullest potential.
Honor Your Passions
It has become all too common for people in modern society to give up their passions for all of their other responsibilities. As children, we’re encouraged to go searching for them and embrace them fully when we find something we love, but as adults, we begin to prioritize the more practical stuff (such as paying the bills) over what brings us joy.
This May, reconnect with your inner child to find what you’re passionate about again. Dive into a past hobby, start something you’re interested in but never tried before, or journal about what your core values are to search for an activity that connects with your values. Once you’ve identified a passion of yours, pursue it just for the sake of enjoying the practice of it without any expectation of a result.
Allow Your Creativity to Flow
According to Osho, “Creativity has nothing to do with any activity in particular – with painting, poetry, dancing, singing. It has nothing to do with anything in particular.” He says that any activity can be creative, and it’s up to you to decide how you want to express that creativity.
“Activity itself is neither creative nor uncreative,” Osho goes on to say. “It is an attitude, an inner approach – how you look at things.”
May is the perfect time of year to see all things from a fresh perspective of light, color, vitality, and of course love. Seek out these qualities in every activity you do and think about how these qualities motivate you to express yourself through them — whether you’re doing something as mundane as cleaning the house or something as exciting as working on a new novel you hope to publish someday.
Celebrate Motherly Love
You don’t have to be a woman, a mother, or an individual who currently has a mother (living or not) to appreciate and celebrate the motherly love that emanates from the Earth this time of year. After all, motherhood is about creating and nurturing life.
It’s enough to simply notice how the Universe somehow knows exactly how and when to care for every living thing that crosses your path. Those flowers in the courtyard, that bird flying to its nest, and even the sun that shines brighter and warmer every day is a spontaneous expression of energy brought to life by its Creator, and even though you may not understand it, you can at least appreciate it.
However you choose to spend this month diving into your deepest passions, embracing your creativity, and celebrating love and life everywhere, make sure you do it from a place of genuine desire and authenticity. Your spirit knows what’s true, and it’s the key to growing into the unique individual that you are meant to be.
