With some of the coldest days of winter behind us, February is a time of transition. Slowly, the world around us is waking up – the longer days means more sunshine, warmth, and light. Spring is on the horizon.

This February, we’re taking a special look at this time of year and the love and compassion it inspires in so many people.

Compassion, the Heart Chakra, and Yoga

Compassion is core to yoga. It’s the energy that flows through one’s heart chakra, connecting you to all things and inspiring oneness. Located in the center of the chest, this chakra is associated with the sense of touch. By opening and balancing this part of your being, you allow yourself to transcend the self and find higher states of being.

To many, compassion is what blooms from personal experience, including the challenges, hardships, and lessons taught by life. This serves as guidance to our character, and when cultivated, it inspires love and kindness. What’s more, practicing compassion serves to cleanse the mind. Consider this Sutra:

Maitri karuna muditopekshanam sukha duhkha punyapunya vishayanam bhavanatash chitta prasadanam

By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind retains its undisturbed calmness.

The sutra describes a truly rewarding aspect of practicing love: the nurturing and calming of your own mind. Keep this in mind when you share your compassion, and feel the positive energy coming into your being. Encourage yourself to embrace the goodness it brings into your life.

Practice Love and Open Yourself

This month, we’re paying ode to the practice of spreading and encouraging compassion. Take time this February to grow love within yourself – focus on the good in everyone, and cultivate your desire to nurture others. Give yourself without expecting things in return; find something you love to do, and give yourself the opportunity to do it. Practice the purpose of your life as you express a true desire toward love. Most of all, accept the friends, family, and strangers met along your journey and allow yourself to enjoy the positivity that radiants from your being. As you do this, you’ll begin to balance your compassion and truly open the flow of your heart chakra.
