One of the clearest signs of reaching a higher state of being is that your mood is no longer quite as reliant on your external world in order to feel good. Yoga is many things to different people. It’s exercise, it’s stress relief, it’s a social activity, it’s a mood booster, and it’s even an effective way to cope with chronic pain.

What yoga truly is at its very core, however, is a journey into the self. By diving deeper into the self, the practitioner learns to distinguish between what’s real and what isn’t through knowledge, selflessness, love, devotion, and self-control. This is called self-realization.

Self-realization is the experience of oneness with truth. The word “yoga” actually means “union” or “connection,” and it is through this system that anyone, anywhere can realize their truth and full potential through integration of the mind, body, and spirit.

Inverting the body helps you to see the world and feel the body from a whole new perspective—one that is often not experienced in everyday modern life. Inversions like headstand, handstand, dolphin poses, shoulder stand and others encourage you to face your fears and gain more clarity in the process of doing so.

 

Practice balance poses to calm and sharpen your state of mind.

The simple act of balancing has a calming effect on the mind because it forces you to focus and concentrate on one point to maintain balance—freeing your state of being from racing thoughts and bringing you back to the present moment. Try lord of the dance pose, Warrior III, tree pose, eagle pose, half moon, and others to become more aware of the reality that change is the only thing that is guaranteed in life and that the current present moment demands your full attention.

This should be a given in yoga, but you’d be surprised how many yogis simply focus on the physical aspect without giving nearly enough attention to breath work. Despite the incredible benefits of engaging in self loving practices like some of those mentioned above, it’s true that they can begin to feel less engaging over time as they become automatic habits that are simply part of your routine. This, of course, is not necessarily a bad thing!

The goal of self-love after all is to make it a habit. This however doesn't mean you shouldn’t switch things up once in a while and try something new.

Here are just a few simple ways that you can add on to your existing self-love practice and give yourself a little extra dose of novelty.

 

1. Spoil yourself with small, healthy rewards more often.

The easiest way to strengthen your sense of self-love is to treat yourself to small rewards that you don’t get to indulge in very much on a regular basis. Whether it’s because of time constraints, lack of resources, or the simple fact that too much of a good thing can make it bad, these are the things that make you feel good and are relatively healthy for you—but are best saved for special occasions.

Sit down and make a list of some of the rarer small ways you can reward yourself. Schedule them into your calendar so that you treat yourself to one at least every week.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Have an extra piece or two of dark chocolate for dessert
  • Take a 30-minute soak in the tub after a long day
  • Set aside some time to color in a stress-relieving adult colouring book
  • Buy a cute new piece of yoga clothing that you could really use
  • Give yourself an at-home hair mask treatment, facial, self-massage, or manicure/pedicure

 

2. Replace some of the time you spend on passive activities with growth activities.

Passive activities are those mundane daily things that just need to get done no matter what (commuting to work, laundry, brushing your teeth, etc.) as well as those unproductive things that you feel compelled to do out of habit (checking social media, watching TV, reading the news, etc.). Growth activities encompass hobbies and activities that you love to do just for the sake of doing them and that challenge you in some way.

So, for example, you could take a passive activity like the time you spend tuning into Netflix every night and use that as a trigger to first spend 5 to 15 minutes of that time practicing guitar, or teaching yourself a new language. You’ll feel good about yourself when you’re done, and committing to a short amount of time makes it hard to say no.

 

3. Slowly start adopting a minimalist mindset in certain areas of your life.

The more you let go of the things you don’t really need in your life, the more time and energy you’ll be able to devote to the things that truly matter to you. Here are some ways you can start using minimalist practices to increase your sense of self-love:

  • Delete apps from your mobile device that constantly suck up your time
  • Spend 5 minutes a day removing or cleaning up clutter from around your home
  • Experiment with outsourcing a task like laundry, cleaning, bookkeeping or some other time consuming task for at least for 30 days
  • Make a list of your favorite 3 to 7 meals you love to eat and stick with preparing those only for at least 30 days

Minimalism frees up your physical, mental, and emotional energy so you can start valuing yourself more than material things and egocentric achievements. Loving yourself need not be anymore complicated than that!

You might have heard that the answers to all your problems and questions already lie within you. And those who make spiritual practices a priority in their lives almost always experience this to be true.

Through meditation, anyone can get deeper in touch with their own truth. Living your truth means living with unshakeable purpose, selflessly serving yourself and others simultaneously for the greater good of everyone and everything.

If you already have a meditation practice in place or are interested in starting one, there are various techniques you can use to gain clarity about your true self. Here are just three to try out.

 

1. Breathe into a place of “what is” to reach a state of non-resistance.

Oftentimes we have limiting beliefs that prevent us from getting to know our true selves. So before we do anything, we have to learn to accept who we are and where we are right now—even if we don’t like it. (Especially if we don’t like it!)

To do this, consider one aspect about yourself or a situation in your life that you can’t change and use your meditation practice to explore your relationship with it. Are you struggling to work with it, or are you trying to ignore that it exists?

As you gain awareness of your own resistance, harness the energy from your core through your breath to combat these resistant thoughts. Continuing to breathe through this process will bring you close to a state of acceptance of what is.

 

2. Meditate on simple questions related to your spiritual dharma.

Your spiritual dharma is your purpose in life. As you sit in meditation and bring yourself to the here and now by spending a few moments focusing on your breath, try asking yourself one of the following questions:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I want?
  • How can I serve myself and others?
  • What am I grateful for?

Now here’s the hard part: Let your heart answer rather than your logical mind. Your answers could come through in the form of bodily sensations which you might have to spend some time interpreting until they reveal themselves through the soft, subtle voice of your inner guidance (your intuition) that lies beneath the constant chatter of the monkey mind.

 

3. Call up compassion, abundance, and longevity through mantra chanting.

Mantra means sound, and it's used in meditation to activate a certain type of energy throughout parts of the body. When chanted (silently or aloud) with full awareness, mantras are powerful enough to lead to higher states of consciousness.

To nurture your inner wisdom through meditation, you can chant the Green Tara Mantra “om tare tutarre ture soha” to relieve physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering. Known as “the Mother of all Buddhas,” Tara offers you protection while awakening sources of great compassion, abundance, and longevity from within.

As you walk down your chosen path, trail, or sidewalk, focus on your senses like your feet hitting the ground with each step, the coolness of your breath as you breathe in the dry and cold air, the sounds you hear around you, and the sights that you see. 2. Find ways to immerse yourself in sunlight.

Thought and light are the two main elements associated with the crown chakra, so getting outside when the sun is shining at its brightest—such as around noon or on clear days—is definitely ideal. Bonus points if you do your walking meditation on a sunny day!

If getting outside isn’t an option because the weather is too cold, you could stay warm inside and try gazing out from a window while letting the sunlight reach your skin.

 

3. Appreciate the little things that Mother Nature does.

As you walk outside or gaze outside your window, ask yourself, what do I genuinely love about the work of Mother Nature? You might appreciate the way that the snow falls, the way the frost paints unique designs on your windows, or the incredible polar opposites of the seasons—such as the frozen stillness of winter versus the lively activity of summer.

Loving nature exactly how it is can help you connect to deeper parts of yourself, opening the doors to greater self-knowledge and understanding that you are so much more than what you think you might be on the surface.

 

4. Nurture the plant and animal life around you.

Let your appreciation for nature inspire great actions of love. Whether you choose to hang a bird feeder in your yard, tend to your indoor or outdoor plants, or start preparing a small herb garden for spring, the love you show the environment and wildlife around you will come back to you.

The heart chakra is the energy center that governs your sense of love, compassion, and beauty. Signs of a blocked heart chakra include relationships that feel draining, shyness, loneliness, difficulty forgiving, and difficulty empathizing with others.

By learning to heal and open your heart chakra, you’ll slowly begin to radiate more love, compassion, and beauty from the inside out—in addition to attracting these energetic qualities back to you from the people you surround yourself with.

Here are some things you can do to start clearing those blockages and opening your heart chakra, just in time for the eventual arrival of spring!

 

1. Accept your emotions, express them, and them let go.

At the root of a blocked heart chakra is emotional repression, so if you want to learn to love freely and openly, you have to get in touch with your emotions—including the ones you don’t want to feel.   • Journaling or writing a letter to yourself
  • Meditating

It may take many bouts of emotional expression to fully get everything out, but beware of clinging to your emotions and getting stuck in a never-ending cycle of emotional turmoil rather than choosing to let them go. 2. Show your love to yourself, another person, animal, or Mother Nature in one small way every single day.

Small daily actions account for big changes over time. If you can strive to take just one small action every day that’s an expression of love, it can become a habit that has the power to completely transform your heart energy center for the better.

Here are a few suggested small daily actions you could take:

  • Hug your partner/spouse or tell them something you love about them
  • Call your mom or other relative
  • Check in with an old friend over Facebook or text message to see how they’re doing (and maybe ask to meet and catch up)
  • Play with your dog or take him/her for a nice long walk
  • Put a bird feeder out in a safe area of your yard

In a world that demands so much of our time and energy to get things done and nurture the relationships we have with people who are so important to us, it can be downright difficult to prioritize our own wellbeing.

Self-care is essential to maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional health—and the way we choose to take good care of ourselves can be as basic as taking a shower in the morning or as elaborate as spending some serious dough to go on a week-long yoga retreat!

The following self-care bath ritual strikes a nice balance between basic and elaborate—offering you the freedom to tailor it your needs in the best way that works for you.

 

1. Schedule it.

Whether you can carve out 20 minutes or two full hours of your time for a good soak in the tub, make sure you put it in your calendar so you don’t forget. It might sound silly to schedule your self-care rituals, but believe us when we say you’ll probably find some excuse not to do it if you know you have other things to do!

 

2. Tidy up your bathroom.

If you want to feel calm and relaxed in the bath, you might want to plan on cleaning up clutter on the vanity countertop, scrubbing away any soap scum, washing your bath towels, and doing any other prep work ahead of time to get your bathroom in good shape. By no means do you need to have a bathroom that looks like it’s straight out of luxury hotel—just do your best to clean any areas that could distract you during your time in the bath.

 

3. Gather bath time essentials that make you feel good.

Some people like scented candles while others don’t. Some like to read in the bath while some would rather close their eyes and listen to soothing music.

Everyone has different preferences, but here are a few ideas of what you might want to include in your bath ritual:

  • Candles or incense
  • A waterproof bluetooth speaker to listen to music
  • Essential oils (We recommend these scents for their relaxing effects)
  • Unscented salts (such as epsom salts or dead sea salts)
  • Facial mask
  • Exfoliating sponge or brush
  • Soap bar
  • Pumice stone
  • Shower cap
  • Hair mask treatment
  • Cup of herbal tea
  • Bathtub caddy
  • A good book to read
  • Hand towel
  • Massage oil or lotion for afterward

 

4. Practice yoga in the bath.

If you’re the type of person who has trouble just sitting there in the bath, there are a few bath-friendly restorative yoga poses you can try. Fire log pose (agnistambhasana), bound ankle pose (baddha konasana), half lord the fishes pose (ardha matsyendrasana), seated forward bend (paschimottanasana), and cow face pose (gomukhasana) are just a few that you can do for an enhanced calming effect on the body and mind.

 

5. Take your time getting out with a mindful self-massage.

Rather than jumping out of the tub to quickly towel off, dress, and get on with your day, try taking at least an extra 5 to 10 minutes at the end of your bath for one last thing—self-massage. Massing your skin with natural oil or lotion can help get you more in touch with your physical body in ways that can help improve body positivity and self-love.

The root chakra is at the base of the chakra system and represents your solid foundation for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-bing. When out of balance, we may feel stuck or unconsciously caught up in desires.

Located at the base of the spine, practicing yoga poses that ground this foundational energy center to the earth can help you feel more secure and stable in all aspects of your life. Try poses like easy pose (sukhasana), garland pose (malasana), mountain pose (tadasana), and savasana (corpse pose).

 

5. Embrace Poses and Sequences That Encourage You to Release Negativity

Moving unwanted energy out of ourselves is key to clearing away the blocks that keep us stuck or unconsciously repeating bad emotional and behavioral patterns.

The breath work and poses discussed above will certainly help, but you can always go above and beyond. For example, you could create an emotional release ritual out of chair pose.

Start by standing tall in tadasana, visualize something you no longer need or want in your life and imagine grabbing it with your fists as you extend your arms up over your head. Then as you sit back into chair pose, quickly sweep your arms down in front of you toward your sides and back behind your torso as you release your fists and throw that unwanted thing away.
